Tennessee baseball will take on Texas A&M in the finals of the College World Series

OMAH, Neb. − Tennessee baseball takes on Texas A&M for the College World Series title.

The No. 1 Vols (58-12) and No. 3 Aggies (52-13) will play in the CWS finals starting Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). It marks the third time in the past three seasons that two SEC teams have played for the national championship and the matchup marks an SEC team’s fifth consecutive championship title.

Tennessee and Texas A&M played in the SEC Tournament on May 23. The Vols won 7-4 in the only game of the season between the teams.

Vols coach Tony Vitello was an assistant coach on Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle’s staff at Texas Christian from 2011-2013.

How Tennessee baseball reached the finals of the College World Series

Tennessee started the College World Series with madness. The Vols scored four runs in the ninth inning and defeated Florida State 12-11 on a Dylan Dreiling walk-off single Friday.

UT cruised past North Carolina 6-1 on Sunday in its second game to start the CWS 2-0 for the first time in program history. It topped Florida State 7-2 on Wednesday and advanced to the final series for the first time since 1951.

How Texas A&M Reached the College World Series Finals

The Aggies also had a thriller in their first game when right fielder Jace LaViolette robbed a potential go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning on Saturday. Texas A&M defeated Florida 3-2 in that game before beating Kentucky 5-1 on Tuesday and eliminating Florida 7-2 on Wednesday.

It is the first appearance in the CWS finals in Texas A&M history.
