Pontiac’s long-awaited $3 million youth recreation center is closer to reality. Thursday is the city’s final public listening session.

In March, the City Council approved a proposal from Chicago-based design firm Racer/MRSA for a 60,000-square-foot facility that would cost $2.45 million. Racer/MRSA is working with Ann Arbor-based Hobbs & Black Architects and Spalding DeDecker, with offices in Detroit and Rochester Hills. The contract states that the work will be carried out in two years.

Mayor Tim Griemel said at Tuesday’s City Council meeting that the listening session will focus on designs for the former McCarroll Elementary School, 191 North Glenwood Ave. in Pontiac, across the street from Oakland Park and the new Roberto Duran Rodriguez Skatepark. The city purchased the former school building in early 2023 for $355,000.
