Democracy needs media that look freely at reality, President Sergio Mattarella said on Thursday.

“Democracy needs a press capable of looking at reality with freedom, intelligence and a critical spirit,” he said in a message published in the Gazzetta di Mantova on the occasion of the 360th anniversary of the oldest newspaper in Italy, founded in 1664.

The message also comes ahead of the President’s visit this Saturday to Solferino and Castiglione delle Stivière near Mantua, to mark the anniversary of the founding of the Red Cross.
