England boss Gareth Southgate said he will ignore media attention during Euro 2024 as his joy at winning games lasts only “45 seconds” due to the criticism he faces.

The Three Lions men got off to a winning start, but a 1-0 win over Serbia drew criticism for not making the most of the attacking talent England had to offer.

Jude Bellingham stole the show with the only goal in Gelsenkirchen, but Phil Foden and Harry Kane were among those who struggled to shine in a slow start from one of the pre-tournament favourites.

“My world is a happier place when I shut myself down,” Southgate said at his pre-match press conference ahead of the showdown with Denmark.

“It’s not good from a global perspective because I have no idea about politics or (world) events, but in the next month that will be a better place for me.”

Southgate admitted there should be more joy in leading his country.

“We’ve had some good results over the years, so we might even take wins for granted. I should let the boys enjoy it more than they do,” he added.

“I get about 45 seconds of pleasure. The whistle blows, I hug everyone, walk off the field and that’s it. I hope they have a little longer than I do! There should be more joy in it, but that’s not my reality if I’m honest. My focus is on achieving qualification from the group, two strong opponents and two matches to achieve that.”
