This ‘Bridgerton’ season, Penelope and Colin are missing something

Spoiler alert! The following contains details of ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3.

Dear kind reader,

I must admit that I expected more from this season. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by “Queen Charlotte” or the previous diamonds in the Netflix series “Bridgerton”. While this season’s diamond may have been the beautiful, quietly searching Francesca Bridgerton, it was truly Penelope Featherington’s time to shine.

And she did, clearly. Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) stepped out of the shadows, stood up for herself and stood out from the noble crowd, and I’m here for it. She also finally caught the attention of her longtime crush and close friend, Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), among other eligible bachelors.

Penelope may have forgiven Colin for the horrible things he said about her, but I haven’t. I watched with one raised eyebrow, wondering when he would prove himself worthy of such a hidden gem – or even just be more interesting than traveler, apparent drinker and supposed writer – and be even more disappointed than the Queen (Golda Rosheuvel). After all, I want to be entertained.

Penelope isn’t wrong when she confessed to him that she said horrible things about him because she was hurt and wondering where old Colin had gone. Me too, sister. The Colin we saw in season one as he wooed Marina (Ruby Barker) was cheeky and funny, friendly and supportive. In the second season, he even visited her to make sure she was happy.

Where is the same energy for the beautiful Pen?

But when he defended her to her cruel mother (Polly Walker) and said he respected her, was attracted to her, and loved her, I finally melted a little. That’s a good start, Mr. Bridgerton.

Now, dear reader, I must apologize because I may have come across as horny in general, but I also wanted more moments of intimacy between Colin and Penelope. The plot is fun, but even more so are the spices.

“Bridgerton” hasn’t been shy with scenes of sexy escapades, especially those of the season’s central couples. And not just the main, um, event – you know, the lustful thrusting and such – but the charged looks, the soft touches, the longing, the beautiful words and soulful declarations.

We saw more of the everyday love and intimacy of his brother Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and his new wife Kate (Simone Ashley). I might even be a little hypocritical, because during a scene between them I mumbled “get off her” while Anthony nearly smothered her with affection and barely let her talk to other people during a party.

There were a lot of plot points and assignments to attend to this season, and I appreciate the foundational work in setting up future seasons (I look forward to more Benedict, played by Luke Thompson, and Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd, and seeing how they explore their limits). sexuality). Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) welcomed the strategy to keep things exciting.

And yet, in the midst of something Whistledown, something that was the barrel, could there have been more kisses? Any more beautiful moments from what emerged from their years of friendship? Did I miss an episode where more of this happened?

I wanted to see Colin worship Penelope, fight for her even more, prove that he loved her mind as well as her body, instead of making her do most of the work and then just accepting it.

I’m waiting with bated breath for next season.
