Are Wollaston Beach and Houghton’s Pond safe for swimming?

Are Wollaston Beach and Houghton’s Pond safe for swimming?

Houghton’s Pond in Milton is closed to swimming Thursday due to high bacteria levels.

Wollaston Beach, which was closed at the start of the week, is open.

The state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation publishes water quality ratings for beaches and ponds under its jurisdiction twice daily at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the Mass.gov website.

Department officials said currently available technology takes 24 hours to produce results, meaning that by the time the publication goes out, the information will not be current. Residents are encouraged to wait 24 hours after a closure notice before returning to see if a swimming area has reopened.

Closure notices will be posted at the individual locations.

Nantasket Beach in Hull and Wollaston Beach in Quincy are among 15 beaches in metro and greater Boston whose overall water safety scores are included in Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s 2023 Beach Season Water Quality Report Card.

Are you worried about the bacteria? What is the water quality like at Quincy and Hull beaches in general?
