Netflix reality show about Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders makes debut

This weekend will be a busy one for Billy Bob’s Texas as it will host four consecutive nights of concerts. Other choices include two comedians, showings of a fun new movie, a symphony concert, a big star concert, a Fort Worth singer coming home, and an anniversary party for a local theater.

Thursday June 20

Improvisation Arlington presents LaVar Walker
LaVar Walker is a comedian and writer who made his breakthrough in 2012 after winning a national comedy competition. He has toured the country with the Shaquille O’Neal All Star Comedy Jam and has also appeared on Uptown strip, The Mo’Nique Showand BETs Comic display. He will perform six times at Improv Arlington through Sunday.

Paul Wall in concert
Houston rapper Paul Wall made a big impression almost twenty years ago with his second album, 2005 The People’s Champion, which went to No. 1 on the Rap, R&B and Billboard 200 charts. After a few more well-received albums, he hasn’t returned to the charts, but he maintains a stellar reputation in his home state. He has released fourteen albums in his career, the most recent of which is The great wall in 2023. He will perform in Billy Bob’s Texas.

Friday June 21

Magnolia in the modern: Thelma
When 93-year-old Thelma Post (June Squibb) is duped by a phone scammer posing as her grandson, she embarks on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her. The film will have seven showings through Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra presents Night of Strings at the Garden: Baroque Room
Bassoon, oboe and harpsichord join the strings of a baroque chamber orchestra, part of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s Night of Strings at the Garden series. This concerto features two concerto grossi, in which the melody passes between a small group of FWSO soloists as they play in an intricate dialogue with the larger group. Selections include those of Karl Jenkin Palladio and Bach’s Suite No. 1 and “Air” from Suite No. 3. The concert will take place at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.

Middenland in concert
The country band Midland surprisingly did not come from the city of the same name, but from Dripping Springs, just outside Austin. Named instead after the Dwight Yoakam song “Fair to Midland,” the group made a major mark on country music, reaching No. 2 with their debut album, On the rocksand number 1 with their 2019 album, Let it go. They also love to play Billy Bob’s Texas multiple nights, having pulled off that trick several times over the years, and will do so again, playing there on Fridays and Saturdays.

Saturday June 22

Melanie Martinez in concert
You might consider singer Melanie Martinez a product of reality music television, since she participated The voice in 2012, but she “only” made it to the top six. That season’s actual winner, Cassadee Pope, has had quite a career, but Martinez has had a spectacular career so far, with each of her three albums landing higher than the last on the Billboard 200, culminating in 2023’s Portals at No. 2. Fans of this concert at Dickies Arena will see the evolution of Martinez’s alter ego, “Cry Baby,” perform live as she runs through hits from all three of her albums.

Country singer Rob Baird was born in Tennessee, but Fort Worth can also claim him since he graduated from TCU and also recorded his first album, 2010’s. Angels with blue eyes, in the city. He has slowly but surely made his way into the industry, with his next three albums climbing the Billboard Country charts. He has now released five albums in his career, the most recent of which is Anthems in 2022. He will play for Tulips FTW.

The Jubilee Theater’s 44th Birthday Party will feature live music, announcements and exclusive offers. This special event marks another year of groundbreaking performances at the Jubilee Theater and sets the stage for Season 44.

Sunday June 23

Hyenas presents Ellen Skrmetti
Comedian Ellen Skrmetti is a Southern sensation best known for her viral sketches like ‘If The Queen Died In the South’ and her series, Hey Jesus, it’s me. She will release her first book, Hey Jesus, it’s mein the fall of 2024. She will perform at Hyena’s for one night only.

Monte Montgomery in concert
Guitarist Monte Montgomery is a local legend in Austin and won the award for “Best Acoustic Guitar Player” at the fair Austin Chronicle‘s Austin Music Awards seven years in a row. The blues/rock musician has released eleven albums in his career, the last of which was in 2019 A call to arms. With this concert he concludes a busy weekend in Billy Bob’s Texas.
