Task force established to bring sports tourism to the province

County councilors unanimously agreed Tuesday to create a task force to look for ways to bring more sporting events — and the associated revenue they would generate — to Montgomery County.

“Sports tourism is a huge industry that has significant economic impacts on communities,” said Natali Fani-González, president of the Economic Development Committee. “From creating jobs, spending in hotels and restaurants and inspiring the next generation of athletes in our community. I am pleased that we are launching this task force and can’t wait to hear its recommendations.”

Council Education and Culture Committee Chairman Will Jawando added: “The Sports Tourism Task Force is an opportunity to expand sports tourism in the province and grow our workforce, along with attracting special events to the province. The Task Force will play a critical role in assessing and identifying facilities to expand our offerings across the province.”

The task force is expected to conduct a facility needs study, with a particular focus on a multi-purpose facility that can both increase sports capacity and also serve as an event facility. It will identify ways to improve marketing and bring professional sports teams here.

Previously, the county attempted to secure a minor league baseball stadium and team in Rockville. “Unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” said Councilman Gabe Albornoz.

He cited the Bowie Baysox team as an example of what he said could accommodate the province and “bring the community together.”

The task force will complete a report with recommendations to the provincial council by June 2025. The members include:

• Executive Director of the Montgomery County Revenue Authority (Chairman)
• Executive Director of the Maryland Sports Commission
• Executive Director of the Maryland SoccerPlex
• President and Chief Executive Officer of Visit Montgomery
• Deputy Director (or designee) of the Montgomery County Parks Department
• Chairman of the Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee
• Montgomery County Public Schools Director of Systemwide Athletics
• Director (or designee) of the Montgomery County Department of Recreation
