Pole Robert Lewandowski faces a late fitness test for the match against Austria

Robert Lewandowski faces a late fitness test before his Poland side take on Austria in their second group match at the European Championship.

Lewandowski missed Poland’s opening match against the Netherlands with a thigh problem suffered in a pre-tournament friendly against Turkey, which head coach Michal Probierz described as a “minor injury”.

The 35-year-old took his place on the bench during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands and has been seen in training ever since.

“There’s a big difference between having the best player in the world on the bench or him on the field,” Probierz said Thursday. “We will make a decision later today.

“I hope the decision is positive and I hope I can select him tomorrow. We still don’t know. They are warming up now. I’m waiting for the medical team to make the decision.”

Lewandowski is Poland’s captain, all-time top scorer (150) and top scorer (82). If the Barcelona forward scores during this European Championship, he will become the first Polish player to score in four consecutive championships.

Hellas Verona defender Pawel Dawidowicz is also in doubt about injuries ahead of the match against Austria.

After facing Austria at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Poland will play against World Cup finalist France at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.
