On a recent ride through Peel Region there was a large turnout of cyclists.

On June 8, more than 1,200 people gathered at the Jim Archdekin Recreation Center in Brampton for the annual “Bike the Creek” event, co-hosted by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). This year Bike the Creek celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Cyclists could choose from several routes and rode through Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga.

“This year’s event offered a variety of inclusive route options for families, friends and cycling enthusiasts of all ages, experience levels and interests,” TRCA communications staff said in a press release.

A number of dignitaries attended the event to deliver remarks, including Catherine McLean, Caledon’s Commissioner for Community and Human Services, and David Laing, Chair of Bike Brampton.

Kathryn Lockyer, TRCA’s Director of Legislative and Property Services, spoke on behalf of the TRCA at the event and said it was important to connect people with recreational and active transportation options.

Lockyer said Bike the Creek encourages healthy lifestyles and a deeper appreciation for green spaces.

The TRCA has a route strategy for the Greater Toronto Area, envisioning a comprehensive regional route system with green spaces along the Lake Ontario shoreline and through the Greenbelt.

“Bike the Creek’s decade-long journey is a community and conservation success story,” the press release reads. “Bike the Creek’s 10th anniversary is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the dedication of TRCA staff and partners, including the City of Brampton, City of Mississauga, City of Caledon and Bike Brampton, as well as the enthusiastic support of the community.”
