Streaming service will sell popcorn at Walmart

Netflix is starting to delve into the popcorn business.

The streaming giant is expanding its consumer business with a push into snacks, teaming up with Popcorn Indiana to launch a line of popcorn branded Netflix: Now Popping. Now Popping is available today at Walmarts nationwide.

Among the flavors launching are ‘Cult Classic Cheddar Kettle Corn’ and ‘Swoonworthy Cinnamon Kettle Corn’.

In fact, Netflix isn’t the first entertainment company to explore the world of popcorn, or even work with Walmart on a popcorn line.

In 2021, AMC Theaters announced its planned expansion into the snack category, including microwaveable and bagged varieties. And last year, the company announced its own deal with Walmart, which sells both varieties.

In fact, popcorn has become an even bigger business for theaters, driven in part by collectible popcorn tubs like the viral ones Dune: part two container (uh, Google it) or the upcoming one Deadpool and Wolverine offers.

Netflix, meanwhile, has also been building out its consumer and live events businesses, in an effort to create a revenue stream beyond streaming.

Netflix launched an online store with merchandise from its shows in 2021, then created a pop-up version at The Grove in Los Angeles.

It also created a pop-up restaurant in Los Angeles called Netflix Bites, with menus created by chefs featured in its programming, and has created interactive experiences in New York, LA and other markets based on shows like Bridgerton And Squid game.

Next year, it will essentially combine all of these things when it launches its first two Netflix House locations in Texas and Pennsylvania, combining shopping, dining and experiences in locations that used to be department stores.

Maybe they even sell the popcorn.
