Heat and humidity fuel storms – NBC New York

Heat and humidity fuel storms – NBC New York

In addition to the hot and humid temperatures we are experiencing this week, storms are forecast again on Thursday evening. And storm chances will continue through Friday and throughout the weekend.

High pressure is still affecting our region, meaning we are currently rain-free. But just north of our area there is a border that brings the chance of showers and storms again, especially in our northernmost provinces.

Thursday

Most of us will stay dry all day, just having to contend with the stifling heat and humidity.

But for those in Sullivan, Ulster or Dutchess County, spotty storms will move through in the evening. Any storms that develop could be severe and produce damaging winds or large hail. Fortunately, these storms are swift and rain totals are low, so no flooding is expected.

Friday

Our storm threat will expand further south on Friday. After another hot and humid start, storms will bubble up and move through our region by mid-afternoon.

The Hudson Valley could see some severe storms again, along with parts of North Jersey and Connecticut. But those in Central Jersey, Long Island and the five boroughs could still see an isolated rain shower or storm as well.

Destructive winds are the biggest concern, but minor flooding is also possible. Flood threats remain limited to the Hudson Valley, where most of Friday’s storms and heaviest rain will develop.

The timing is mainly in the afternoon and evening hours, so bring the umbrella before heading out and don’t be surprised if you encounter a few showers on the way home.

Saturday

Storm chances are spread across the region on Saturday.

From the Hudson Valley to the Jersey Shore, you’ll want to have an umbrella handy. There may be a few light showers locally from around lunchtime until the evening, although there will be no showers all day.

Fortunately, no destructive winds or large hail are expected from these storms. There is again a marginal chance of minor flooding in the northern Hudson Valley.

Unfortunately, these weekend showers won’t provide much relief from the heat and humidity. It won’t be until a cold front passes on Monday that we’ll finally get a break, even if it will be short-lived.
