Pine Belt family in need as child battles leukemia

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – A Pine Belt family is in need as their child undergoes chemotherapy in Jackson.

Merryn Mee, 4, of Hattiesburg, was diagnosed with type B leukemia on May 15. Since becoming ill, Mee has had to undergo extensive IV and spinal chemotherapy to fight the cancer.

Test results show Mee’s first round of chemotherapy was successful, but doctors said the treatment will be a long process. She currently has to go to the hospital once a week.

“This specific phase goal is to get rid of the leukemia cells by the end of the first phase and continue treating them so that you don’t relapse and they don’t come back. Everything is within the monthly range, because your counts are wrong they have to postpone things. And so the next phase is a six to nine month phase. And that’s the most, these beginnings in the second phase, are the most intense phases. That’s the most traveling, that’s the most potential shots because she doesn’t have an immune system right now,” said Mee’s mother, Meghan Mee.

Me is waiting for the second phase of chemotherapy. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family pay for her travel and medical expenses.
