Poona: In response to low enrolment figures, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed to merge 10 of its schools, including five Marathi, two English and three Urdu schools. The proposal, aimed at improving resource utilisation and management, has been placed before the Assembly for approval.

The PMC’s Primary Education Department runs schools in morning and afternoon sessions in the same buildings. This system has led to lower enrollment and management challenges as it has become difficult to maintain the state-approved teacher-pupil ratio for grades 1 to 8. The shortage of teachers forces them to manage multiple classes, which affects the quality of education for students.

Some teachers from these low-enrollment schools are considered redundant and cannot be appointed as principals. The merger would consolidate the number of students, which would allow for the recognition of principals and better school management.

No schools will be closed, so there will be no disruption to students. Early morning attendance is currently low and the merger will facilitate full-time use of school buildings and extend lesson hours.

The proposal also includes the redeployment of eight nursery teachers, eight nursery assistants, eight peons and one guard to other schools. Surplus headmasters, teachers and non-teaching staff will be redeployed and adjusted as necessary.
