At least 23 traffic controllers in training were injured after they were hit by a vehicle at a military base in Gauteng.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) reported that members of the Gauteng Traffic Warden Training Programme were injured during a training session on Friday at Dunnottar military base.

SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said the injured recruits were taken to various hospitals around the Dunnottar military base.

Injuries

“A total of fourteen members have been discharged with minor injuries and nine members remain in hospital for further medical care.

“The person who caused the incident has been arrested and is under medical observation. A case has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS),” Dlamini said.

Dlamini said Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi visited the scene of the incident and were fully briefed by the relevant authorities and medical personnel who treated the injured.

“The two directors are also in contact with the members affected by this incident at the military base this morning. Social workers, psychologists and chaplains have been sent to the families of the injured and hospitalized members to provide support.”

Dlamini added that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.

Soldiers killed

The accident came weeks after four members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after they lit a fire to keep warm in freezing weather in the northwestern US.

The four SANDF soldiers were deployed on Friday for a 24-hour shift in Shaft 3, a dormant mine shaft in Orkney, near the abandoned Harry Oppenheimer Stadium.

It is a hotspot for illegal mining.

Saps has launched an investigation into the deaths of four members.
