This year a museum for performing arts will open at the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi: Saji Cheiryan

The state government will start a performing arts museum at the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi this year to showcase the evolution of various performing arts forms, Culture Minister Saji Cherian said. A sum of ₹50 lakh will be allocated for the project, he added.

Speaking after presenting the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi awards at the regional theatre on Saturday, the minister said artists have the responsibility to respond to socio-political issues that deeply affect the society.

He congratulated the award winners. Since many talented artists are not recognized, the Cultural Affairs Department will take initiatives to address the problem, he said.

The minister said the department has introduced a new scheme to provide insurance cover to artists affiliated with the Akademi. A centre will be opened in Mavelikara to provide protection to experienced artists who need support, he added.

The Minister distributed three scholarships, 17 awards and 22 Gurupuja awards during the function. Mridangam artiste Parassala Ravi, theatre personality TM Abraham and dancer Kala Vijayan received scholarships from the Minister.

Akademi President Mattannur Sankaran Kutty presided over the function. The function began with percussion ensembles. A music programme led by musician Sarath followed the award ceremony.
