CrowdStrike bug affects 8.5 million Windows devices, Microsoft says

Washington, July 21 (IANS) Microsoft said on Saturday that the CrowdStrike update, which has shut down hundreds of battles around the world and disrupted online services, affected 8.5 million systems running Windows operating systems, less than 1 percent of Windows devices. But the impact was disproportionate because CrowdStrike is used by enterprises that run many critical services.

The IT giant said in a statement that it is “working around the clock and providing ongoing updates and support”.

“Additionally, CrowdStrike has helped us develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure to more quickly fix the flawed CrowdStrike update,” it added.

CrowdStrike is a leading cybersecurity firm whose software update for customers on Friday affected computer systems running Microsoft’s Windows operating system, grounding an estimated 1,400 flights from the U.S. to the U.K. to the Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong and Dubai. It also disrupted medical and banking services and local transportation systems in many U.S. cities.

The disruptions were severe enough that the White House said it had briefed President Joe Biden and that teams of U.S. officials were in contact with private sector players to find a solution as quickly as possible.

“While software updates can occasionally cause disruptions, major incidents like the CrowdStrike event are rare,” Microsoft said.

“We currently estimate that the CrowdStrike update impacted 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than 1 percent of all Windows machines. While the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises running many critical services,” it added.

Microsoft also said the outage demonstrates the “interconnected nature of our broad ecosystem: global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors and other software vendors, and customers.”

The outage was also a reminder, the company noted, saying, “It showed how important it is for all of us in the technology ecosystem to prioritize working with secure deployment and disaster recovery using the mechanisms in place.”
