Royal Children’s Hospital opens school

Yalingbu Yirramboi – Royal Children’s Hospital School has officially opened to patients.

The new school offers children with chronic health problems the opportunity to continue their education. A full range of classes are offered, from preparatory education to the twelfth grade.

Students receive individual teaching and learning programs that align with Victoria’s curriculum. This is done through a variety of teaching formats, including classroom sessions, small group sessions and one-on-one bedside support, depending on the individual patient needs.

Acting Health Minister Ingrid Stitt said the school is also a great help for the children’s parents.

“No child should miss out on the education they need while they are ill. We are giving children in Victoria access to a world-class education, easing the burden on parents to keep their child on track while they are ill or recovering,” she said.

The school also offers distance learning for students who are recovering at home but are not yet well enough to come to school.

If a child is feeling well enough, it helps students return to their original school after leaving hospital.

The school was made possible by a $3.6 million investment from the state government.

Education Minister Ben Carroll spoke about the positives the school will have for students.

“The opening of the Yalingbu Yirramboi, a new school at the Royal Children’s Hospital, will ensure that young patients do not miss out on the good quality education they deserve,” he said.

The school is governed by a school board led by principal Naomi McBride. The new school will initially employ 22 qualified teachers and 6 educational support staff.

The introduction of a registered school at the Royal Children’s Hospital will provide a more consistent approach to school-based education across hospitals in Victoria, as it ties in with existing hospital-based education systems such as the Monash Children’s Hospital School.

The traditional landowners were consulted about the final name of the school.

Yalingbu Yirramboi means ‘Today and Tomorrow’ in the local languages of the Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung peoples.
