Andres Gomez scores twice to level the score after delay

COMMERCE CITY, Colorado. – After having to wait almost two hours to get back onto the field due to the weather conditions, Andrés Gomez got going and scored the equaliser.

Gomez scored the first goal of the game from a distance in the 9th minute, but his second goal was even better.

On a pass from Anderson Julio, Gomez faked a run towards the goal line before re-positioning himself at the top of the penalty area.

This move gave him enough space to shoot and a perfect shot resulted in an almost unstoppable ball into the top left corner.

Gomez now has 12 goals and 8 assists this season.

If Gomez finds the net, he’s likely to do it again. He’s scored twice in four games this year.

Real Salt Lake hoping for fourth straight Rocky Mountain Cup

Real have dominated the club’s biggest rivals in recent years, winning the Rocky Mountain Cup in seven of the last eight seasons.

But this year things looked a little different.

Colorado defeated RSL at America First Field in March. The loss of the rivalry must have hurt, because the club went on to a franchise-record 15-game unbeaten run over the next three months.

When the two clubs met again, Real scored a season-record five goals to gain some home revenge. In that match, the Rapids led 3-2 after 84 minutes before RSL scored three goals in 10 minutes.

With the trophy at stake, Real Salt Lake will take on Colorado on their side of the Rocky Mountains for the first time this season.

As it stands going into Matchday 28, RSL sits in third place in the West with a record of 12-4-8. They are two points behind the LA Galaxy in first place and six points out of fourth place.

Colorado lost to the Galaxy on Wednesday and now sits in fifth place in the league with an 11-9-5 record.

There is still a path for Real to regain top spot in the West heading into the Leagues Cup. If Portland can beat the Galaxy and Seattle beat LAFC, RSL only need to beat the Rapids.

However, RSL will have to do without its most important player, both in Colorado and at the start of the Leagues Cup.

Star player Chicho Arango is serving a four-match suspension and will be allowed to play again on Monday, August 5 against Houston Dynamo.
