Why Russell Henry Could Shatter Bryson DeChambeau’s Patriotic Dreams After LIV Captain’s Disturbing Departure

Why Russell Henry Could Shatter Bryson DeChambeau’s Patriotic Dreams After LIV Captain’s Disturbing Departure

“Every high has a low!” This certainly reflects Bryson DeChambeau’s good fortune over the past two months. He beat Rory McIlroy by one stroke at the US Open last month. However, he failed to make the cut at The Open Championship. At 9-over, he had to fly back from Royal Troon after Friday’s round.

Will his early exit from the season’s final major dash his dream of representing the US at Bethpage at the 2025 Ryder Cup? Keegan Bradley, the captain, must select players from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf for the team. However, players ranked lower than DeChambeau in the OWGR top 10 could pose a significant challenge to his inclusion in the team.

Will Russell Henley beat Bryson DeChambeau and reach the Top 10?

Russell Henley finished the 2023 season ranked 24th on the OWGR list. But his gameplay improved significantly in the 2024 season, propelling the 35-year-old up to 20th. Now, especially with an impressive performance after a gruelling third round at Royal Troon, Henley has not only climbed the leaderboard, but is also in contention to break into the OWGR top 10.

Previously ranked below the Top 25, Henley finished the round with an impressive 5-under 66 after making six birdies in the penultimate round. He currently shares second place with five other pros.

Currently, at 153.66, he will have 213.66 points to his name. While Bryson DeChambeau is currently at 194.69. In that case, Henley will undoubtedly surpass him on the list, and also Patrick Cantlay, who is at 7. If that happens, the chances of the Scientist playing at Bethpage become increasingly slim.

And well, if Henley can keep up the momentum and improve, who knows, maybe win the Major, then he gets 100 points. That puts him in seventh place in a row, adding Viktor Hovland to the list of players he has surpassed. But the question is, what happened to DeChambeau that he couldn’t keep his momentum going into the Majors?

DeChambeau’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Open Championship

After a standout win at Pinehurst 2, the Crushers GC Captain failed to go under par in either of his two rounds at Royal Troon. He opened the final Major of the season with a bogey on Thursday. This was followed by back-to-back bogeys at Gyaws and Dunure. The only highlight of DeChambeau’s Scottish outing came when he scored an eagle on the 16th hole. His overall performance was not up to par.

After carding a total of 10 bogeys and a double bogey in the first two rounds, DeChambeau knew he couldn’t make it any further. But he was pleased with the performance he delivered. “I just didn’t have the things that I wanted; like I said at the beginning of the week, you put marbles in a blender and you shake them up, and that’s what’s happening here,” said the LIV Golfer! Although his final major of the season didn’t go as planned, the LIV golfer had great performances at the other three majors, starting with a T6 at the Masters, followed by a runner-up finish at Valhalla.
