Students of government schools in Karnataka will now be provided with eggs six days a week as part of the state’s mid-day meal programme, thanks to a new agreement signed between the Azim Premji Foundation and the Karnataka government. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), finalised on Saturday, aims to improve the nutritional quality of the mid-day meal programme over the next three years.

“An alternative food supplement will be provided to those students who do not eat eggs due to cultural preferences,” the foundation said in a statement seen by news agency PTI.

Previously, the state’s mid-day meal programme included eggs only two days a week. Under the new MoU, the Azim Premji Foundation will provide eggs four additional days a week, ensuring that every student from grades 1 to 10 in government and government-aided schools gets one egg a day.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the agreement had been signed between the Department of Primary and Secondary Education and the Azim Premji Foundation. He stressed the importance of providing healthy food to all students irrespective of the type of school they attend.

“I have seen children come to school without breakfast and stay until noon without lunch. This prompted us to provide food and eggs twice a week,” he said.

About 5.5 lakh students will benefit from the initiative, which aims to improve their nutritional intake and support their overall health.

“The foundation will work closely with the Commissioner for School Education and Literacy (CSE) to ensure that all children in schools under the programme receive high quality eggs,” the foundation’s statement said.
