Nearly 20,000 people arrested for permit violations in Delhi till mid-July

New Delhi: Delhi traffic police have arrested nearly 20,000 people for driving licence violations till mid-July, a 45 percent increase from the same period last year, officials said on Sunday.

The Kotwali and Daryaganj roundabouts were among the top ten on the list with the highest number of violations this year up to July 15, the organization said.

“Delhi Traffic Police have booked 20,009 violators for licence violations, a significant increase from 13,751 in 2023. This is a nearly 45 per cent increase in prosecutions compared to the previous year,” the data showed.

According to the police, this increase is due to stricter enforcement measures and a comprehensive strategy to tackle violations among commercial vehicle operators.

Specialised teams have been deployed in the city to carry out regular checks at strategic locations including major intersections, highways and commercial centres, authorities said.

Police have conducted an extensive analysis of the ten roundabouts where the highest number of fines for permit violations were issued up to July 15, officials said.

This research identified specific areas where these violations occur most frequently. By pinpointing these locations, targeted enforcement measures can be implemented to improve compliance with traffic laws, they said.

The top ten areas in Delhi where the most violations were recorded this year are Kotwali 1,406, Daryagnaj 1,279, Civil Lines 1,263, Madhu Vihar 1,123, Lajpat Nagar 1,020, Bhajanpura 980, Sadar Bazar 934, Kamla Market 802, Karol Bagh 754 and Nand Nagri 722, the data showed.

“Criticising tougher on licensing violations is part of a larger initiative to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion,” a senior police official said.

“We have stressed the importance of complying with the permit requirements, as failure to comply poses significant risks to public safety and contributes to traffic problems,” the official said.

In response to the increase in prosecutions, the Delhi Traffic Police has also launched awareness campaigns to educate vehicle owners and drivers about the importance of obtaining and maintaining valid permits, officials said.

These campaigns are designed to inform the public about the legal requirements and the consequences of violations, thereby encouraging voluntary compliance, the researchers said.

They said this increase in prosecutions is expected to continue as we look to maintain the momentum of enforcement action.
