Jharkhand News: Guru is a social guide, say Sanskrit scholars

Ranchi, July 21: Dr Shailesh Kumar Mishra, a senior lecturer at the Rajkiya Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Ranchi, on Sunday said Guru Purnima, also known as Vyas Purnima, is an important festival in Indian culture. It emphasises the importance of the Guru and the respect he or she deserves.

He stressed that the festival teaches the value of education, knowledge and morality. He also stressed that the guru holds the highest position in society and therefore it is our duty to show him or her respect and reverence.

Dr. Mishra spoke as the guest of honour at the Guru Purnima and Vyas Jayanti celebrations organised by the Sanskrit Department of the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi.

Contributions by Maharishi Ved Vyasa

Dr. Mishra noted that a guru is a social guide and discussed the contributions of Maharishi Ved Vyasa. He stated that the pursuit of righteousness, wealth, pleasure and liberation should follow the path laid down by Vyasa.

He noted that Ved Vyasa taught the practice of righteous pursuit of wealth and pleasure. He emphasized that Vyasa is a spokesman for Indian culture and that his works, the Mahabharata and the Puranas, are treasures of Indian heritage.

He pointed out that the ultimate goal of education is character building and indicated that gurus want their disciples to reach the pinnacle of progress, stressing that students should embody strength in their actions and speech. He also indicated that gurus play a crucial role in imparting practical knowledge and suggested that adopting Indian values, traditions and rituals can help overcome difficulties.

During the event, the programme was chaired by Dr. Dhananjay Vasudev Dwivedi, Head of the Department of Sanskrit at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi.

Role of Gurus and Disciples

He emphasized Maharishi Ved Vyasa’s contribution to Sanskrit literature and stressed that a guru should have gravity. He stated that gurus and disciples play an important role in the construction of society and nation and they should discharge their responsibilities in a proper manner.

He described how a guru cultivates the soul of a disciple and plays an important role in their personality development. Dr. Dwivedi marked the day as a day to express gratitude to gurus who have played an important role in life. He defined a guru as one who understands dharma, acts upon it, is devoted to it and can extract the essence from all the scriptures.

Importance of lifelong learning

The special guest at the event, Dr. Rahul Kumar, a professor in the Sanskrit department of Marwari College, stressed the importance of lifelong learning. He mentioned that in the Indian tradition, the position of a guru is of utmost importance and all gurus who dispel the darkness of ignorance are worthy of their position. He stressed the necessity of a guru for the proper continuation of the cycle of life.

Departmental Professor Dr. Jagdamba Prasad stated that parents are the highest gurus and those who impart scriptural and practical knowledge are also gurus. He discussed the contributions of Maharishi Ved Vyasa and noted his crucial role in preserving Indian culture and religion. He mentioned that Vyasa compiled the Mahabharata, the eighteen Puranas and the Vedas and for his great contributions he is revered as Vyasa.

Education is not just book knowledge

Departmental lecturer Dr. Shrimitra stressed that the importance of a guru has not diminished in the present era. Despite changes in the education system and the means of acquiring education, the role of a guru remains essential.

She stated that education is not just book knowledge but a process of complete personality development in which the role of a guru is extremely important. A guru not only imparts knowledge but also introduces disciples to moral values ​​and ideals.

Amitabh Kumar said that Guru Purnima inspires us to always follow the path shown by our gurus and apply their teachings in our lives, thus making our lives meaningful and enlightened.

The event started with an invocation by student Shubham Pandey and included several performances such as Saraswati Vandana by Prerana Bharti, a welcome song by Tannu Singh, introductions by Shivam Narayan, illumination of the essence of Gurutattva by Sarvottama, a mesmerizing dance by Anamika and a Sanskrit song by Surendra Mahato, coordinated by Ayush Kumar and Shobha Munda.
