RUGBY SEVENS RULES AND TOURNAMENT FORMAT

Rugby Sevens is still a relatively new sport on the Olympic calendar. Here is everything you need to know about this fast-growing sport.

The teams are divided into three groups of four, with the top two countries automatically qualifying for the quarter-finals.

In the final, the two highest third-place finishers from the group stage will compete against them.

The format features significant changes from the 15-on-1 format, namely:

  • 7 players per team on the field
  • Five substitutes, with five substitutions
  • Seven minute halves
  • Maximum two minutes rest
  • Matches ending in a draw after regular time will be continued in golden point and extra time in multiple periods of 5 minutes.
  • All conversion attempts must be performed with a dropkick and must be performed within 30 seconds, instead of the option to perform a placekick.
  • Scrums with three players instead of the usual eight.
  • Kick-off: In sevens, the team that has just scored starts, rather than the team that received the ball.
  • Players who receive a yellow card are only out for two minutes
