Never before have there been Olympic Games where the host city was portrayed in this way.

In an opening ceremony like no other, the 2024 Summer Games kicked off with a wave of pageantry that, well, flowed down the Seine, incorporating centuries of French history into a strange but oddly endearing four-hour spectacle. It acknowledged historical figures (Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon), historical art (the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo), historical sites (the Place de la Concorde, Notre Dame, the Louvre) and, of course, French fashion via a catwalk along a pedestrian bridge over the Seine.

Meanwhile it started to rain, and then it started to pour, but still the show went on.
