Chiefs humiliated by Yanga SC

Chiefs humiliated by Yanga SC

The Soweto giants suffered a huge defeat against the Tanzanian champions, just days after returning from Europe.

Kaizer Chiefs fans have another reason to worry after their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Yanga SC in the Toyota Cup match played at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Amakhosi finished 10th in the 2023/24 Premier Soccer League, their worst performance, prompting management to make changes to the technical team. Nasreddine Nabi has spent three weeks with the Glamour Boys in Turkey to try to instill his tactics and ideologies.

In their last two pre-season games, prior to the match against Yanga, Chiefs recorded a 5-2 victory over Al Shahaniya before drawing with Dibba Al-Hisn, which explains why supporters were optimistic about a good match against the Tanzanian champions.

A good start, but…

The Soweto giants had made an impressive start, trying to string passes together and play a beautiful game. But Yanga, who had beaten TS Galaxy by a game on Wednesday, were not about to give up.

Zimbabwean international Prince Dube, who scored the only goal in the win over the Rockets, found the net after 25 minutes. The goal seemed to motivate the Glamour Boys as they picked up the pace.

However, it was Wananchi who scored the second goal through their dangerous Aziz Ki, after a good move.

An embarrassing finish

Things got worse for the Nabi-led team in the 57th minute when Clement Mzize made it 3-0 despite changes from both teams.

The Tanzanian champions went on to win the match convincingly, thanks to Burkina Faso international Ki, who scored two goals in the 63rd minute to make it 4-0, much to the disappointment of the home fans.

It is a result that loyal Chiefs fans did not expect, especially after the preparations.

The match proves that Amakhosi need more quality players to have a chance of competing with Mamelodi Sundowns and rivals Orlando Pirates next season.
