James Gunn Congratulates ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ on BO Success Amid Fan Questions

As the film breaks multiple box office records, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn shared his congratulations on social media directed at Deadpool and Wolverine.

Before moving to DC Studios, Gunn was a prominent figure at Marvel Studios, writing and directing the three Guardians of the Universe movies, the GOTG Holiday Specialand managed Stan Lee’s cameos in Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: HomecomingAnd Thor: Ragnarokamong other contributions.

Given his history, it’s hardly surprising that Gunn would be happy to see the MCU do well. However, some fans are curious about his thoughts on a certain joke early in the film.

Spoilers go ahead!

When Wade Wilson begins his search for a Wolverine Variant, he encounters one played by Man of Steel star Henry Cavill. Wade, initially excited, tells “Cavillrine” that the MCU will treat him much better than “they did across the street.”

This is a direct reference to Cavill’s brief reprise of his Superman role in Black Adam‘s post-credits scene, but was replaced by David Corenswet when Gunn and Peter Safran took over and decided to revive the franchise.

The joke is relatively playful and it’s hard to imagine Gunn being too upset about it, assuming he’s even seen the film!

The MPAA recently gave the film an official R rating for its “There is intense bloody violence and language, gore and sexual references throughout.”

“Marvel Studios presents their biggest mistake yet – Deadpool & Wolverine,” reads the new summary. “A listless Wade Wilson struggles through civilian life, his days as the morally flexible mercenary Deadpool behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit up again—with an even more reluctant… reluctant? reluctant? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to—F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the lead roles, the film features returning characters played by Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio). Newcomer Emma Corrin (The crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) also join the cast, playing a TV agent and Charles Xavier’s evil counterpart, Cassandra Nova, respectively.

Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool and Wolverine is based on a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Zeb Wells.
