Artists show their western side

Artists of all ages from the western suburbs will be celebrated in a new exhibition in Footscray on August 2.

The Show Your West Side Art Prize and Exhibition is produced by Footscray artists Sally Walshe, aka LaDY MoHaWK.

The theme of the exhibition is ‘west side stories’, inviting artists from Melbourne’s west to explore their diverse experiences and stories through art.

Walshe said the exhibition was open to all creatives living, working or studying in Melbourne’s west – including children – as she wanted to create an inclusive exhibition.

Last year the Show Your West Side exhibition was only open to residents of Maribyrnong.

“I really want the West to be less tied to our municipalities, especially when it comes to opportunities for the arts,” Walshe said.

“Last year, many artists from other municipalities wanted to participate. This year I have increased the number of media exhibited.

“I wanted the exhibition to be inclusive, not exclusive.”

According to Walshe, it is essential that children feel that they can participate in and contribute to the culture of a community.

“Last year we had over 100 children participate, and their work was so beautiful and encouraging,” she said.

“There will be twelve prizes, including four student prizes, totaling $5,349.”

Show Your West Side is open from 2nd to 30th August at the Footscray Connectivity Centre, 138 Nicholson Street, Footscray.
