2024 Olympics LIVE: Tom Daley targets first Team GB gold medal in diving final after Adam Peaty’s heartbreak and Andy Murray’s thrilling win

Adam Peaty in tears during emotional interview after silver medal at the Paris Olympics

The Olympic Games promise to be another day full of excitement and thrills, because in Paris 2024 things will get going.

Tom Daley will be bidding for Team GB’s first gold medal on day three of the Olympic Games as the British flag bearer attempts to defend his men’s 10m synchronised diving title on Monday morning. Daley won gold in the event in Tokyo three years ago but has a new partner in team-mate Noah Williams as the 30-year-old enters his fifth Olympic Games.

There is another strong contender for a gold medal in cross-country mountain biking, with Tom Pidcock also looking to defend his title in Paris. Team GB added two medals on a dramatic Sunday, when Adam Peaty missed out on the men’s 100m breaststroke by just 0.02 seconds in a heartbreaking finish. Peaty won silver, while Kimberley Woods took home bronze in the canoe slalom.

Elsewhere today, one of the biggest clashes of the Olympics will take place in tennis as Rafael Nadal takes on Novak Djokovic in a sensational second-round clash in the men’s singles, while gymnastics’ first is awarded in the men’s all-around team final. Simone Biles made a stunning return to the Olympics yesterday and will be back in the women’s final on Tuesday.

Kimberley Woods says bronze medal in Paris feels ‘absolutely incredible’

It took less than 150 seconds to confirm that Kimberley Woods had won her Olympic bronze medal, but for the rugby kayaker the wait felt like an eternity.

The 28-year-old, who was visibly upset in Tokyo three summers ago after being given a 56-second penalty for finishing last in her first Olympic final, sat in third place with just one competitor left to knock her off the podium in Paris: defending champion Ricarda Funk, the fastest finisher in the afternoon’s semi-final.

Adam Peaty suffers heartbreak at the Paris Olympics after falling agonisingly short of a historic triple gold medal

It’s not a fairytale ending for Adam Peaty. A shared silver medal in Paris, behind Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi in what turned out to be a slow race that came down to pure timing at the wall.

Peaty must have thought he had won. He held off world champion Qin Haiyang, but in a thrilling final sprint he still took victory, making him, like Michael Phelps, the only man to win three consecutive gold medals at the Olympic Games in the individual events.

Disappointment of course, but don’t underestimate how the British great achieved victory from the most unlikely position after the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
