Home Affairs official appears in Free State court – LNN

A 46-year-old Home Office civil servant is expected to appear in Lindley Crown Court today on suspicion of corruption.

He was arrested on Friday by detectives from Serious Corruption Investigation in Bethlehem.

The suspect is said to have supplied false identity documents to foreigners worth R10,000.

His arrest is related to Bangladeshi Saddam Hussein (22), who was arrested in April for helping and encouraging another foreigner to obtain a South African identity card.

Hussein, who was sentenced to three years in prison by Kroonstad District Court on June 24 for a separate identity document fraud case, will appear again in Lindley District Court tomorrow.

He is expected to appear alongside the Home Office official during his second appearance.

Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, head of the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) in the Free State, has commended detectives for their tireless efforts in detecting corruption involving false identity documents.

“We are going after all officials involved in this plan. Having undocumented immigrants has negative economic and security implications for the country and is therefore a serious crime,” Bokaba added. – SAnews.gov.za
