Google adds Home support to first-generation wired Nest doorbell

Google adds Home support to first-generation wired Nest doorbell

Google is finally expanding support for the first-generation wired Nest Doorbell in the Google Home app, continuing to merge Nest products into the Google Home platform.

This comes after adding support for the first-generation Nest Cam Indoor and Nest Cam Outdoor last year. Google will be rolling out access to Public Preview users with a first-generation wired Nest Doorbell in the coming weeks, the company says.

Once users move their doorbell, formerly known as Nest Hello, to the Public Preview for the Google Home app, they’ll be able to manage it alongside other devices in the Home app instead of having to use the Nest app. Users can also try out new features, like an updated camera history experience with quick switching between timeline and event lists to view camera history.

Users can access these new camera history experiences in both the Google Home app and Google Home for the web.

Google wants to unite more Nest products with Google Home

According to Google, moving the doorbell to the Home app will provide a more organized way to manage third-party and Google devices in one place. The company says the Home app offers “the best Nest app experience” for controlling the camera, checking live video and watching clips.

Users can also try out new features such as a script editor to create automations, and view live feeds and video history through most web browsers.

Moving the Nest Doorbell to the Google Home app will remove the doorbell from the Nest app, the company adds.

The company says it is actively working to port more Nest devices to the Home app.

“We’re continuing to support more Nest devices and features in the Home app, while keeping the bar high for privacy, security, and user experience,” the company said in a post on the Google Nest Community forum. “Each device has its own complexities and requires infrastructure migrations, device software updates, and hardware support evaluations.”

In addition to the first-generation wired Nest Doorbell, which is not supported in the Google Home app, there are other Nest Doorbell products, including the battery-powered Nest Doorbell and the second-generation wired Nest Doorbell.

Google is also launching advanced AI image detection for garage door monitoring in Google Home for compatible Nest Cam users. This feature can detect if a garage has been left open and alert the homeowner without any additional hardware or sensors.

This is available to users in the US and Canada who have a Nest Aware subscription and own a Nest Cam (indoor, wired, 2nd generation) or a Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery-powered) that is plugged into AC power.
