‘Sweet Home’ director says series was ‘taxing and painful’ experience

Lee Eung-bok, the director of the Netflix hit K-drama Sweet Homespoke candidly about what it was like working on the series, which spanned three seasons.

Earlier this month, Netflix released the long-awaited third and final season of Sweet HomeThe series, starring Song Kang, first premiered on the streaming service in 2020 to huge critical and commercial success.

However, the second and third seasons of the show were not as well received by critics and audiences, including NMEwhich both seasons have received mixed three-star reviews. In response to the criticism, director Lee Eung-bok told Korea JoongAng Daily that “if criticism can be constructive and witty, it can also be a good reward”.

Meanwhile, he also spoke about how adding new characters in the final season was “inevitable”, adding that “just sticking with the same characters from season one could become a pitfall later on”.

Lee also spoke about the increased use of CGI in seasons two and three, saying they tried to use it “bolderly” as the show moved beyond its original setting and focused on “a more open space.”

The director of all three seasons of Sweet Home also described his experience working on the series as “difficult and painful”, explaining that the K-drama was “a project that was vastly different from the work I had done before”.

Elsewhere in the interview, Korea JoongAng Daily also wrote that Lee considered the possibility of a Sweet Home spin-off. However, the publication also noted that “it remains only a consideration.”
