Resident wonders if they would be ‘better off dead’Syracuse’s worst nursing home provided dangerous and substandard care, putting dozens of residents at risk of serious injury or death this summer, state health inspectors wrote in a scathing inspection report. Inspectors found incompetent nurses, inedible food, unclean spaces, administrators who failed to ensure proper care and pharmacists who failed to detect errors with medications. “In layman’s terms, it’s very, very bad,” said a law professor at Syracuse University.

The Syracuse family lives above a lake with sewage. Can anyone help? Kayla Deaver’s bed has been in her dining room for months. She and her baby, Amelia, had to stop sleeping in the bedroom because the smell was so bad. In the basement, just below the room, is an expanding lake of human sewage. Deaver said she has tried everyone she was expected to: her landlord, law enforcement, her case worker at the Onondaga County Department of Social Services. Her friend even emailed Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh’s office. But nothing helped. This week, the sewer in the basement is still overflowing, and she still lives there with her three children.

Hertz staff left the post at Syracuse airport, so people just took random cars: Employees left their posts at a car rental company at the Syracuse airport, causing chaos, according to a new report. The bizarre incident happened last summer at Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Hertz staff walked away from their desks, leaving at least 20 customers behind as they came to pick up their reserved vehicles. Their solution? Take any car you can find keys to, apparently.

A crumbling mansion in Syracuse gets new life: A neglected historic building in Syracuse will soon get a new life as a home for refugees looking to build their own new lives in America. Interfaith Works of Central New York plans to renovate and open a transitional housing facility around the corner from its North Side offices, which will help meet housing needs for clients.
